A Newborn Care Specialist, sometimes incorrectly referred to as a “night nurse” (an NCS who also holds an RN degree) is an expert on all things baby. She helps you learn about your newborn’s cues, how to practically take care of baby, and answers all your “is this normal?” questions. A Newborn Care Specialist usually works overnights in 10-12 hour shifts or sometimes 24/7 with a built in 4-5 hour break in the afternoon. A good NCS will work herself out of a job by gently teaching baby to sleep through the night.
A Postpartum Doula will still at times hold and care for your newborn, but will mainly advocate for and support the working parent while they recover from birth. A postpartum doula often comes during the daytime to “relieve” the birthing parent so that she can shower, eat, pump, rest, and heal. Postpartum Doula tasks can include any or all of the following: preparing nourishing meals, C-section scar care, belly binding, preparing a sitz bath, helping mom shower and dress, breastfeeding support, nursery organization, light housekeeping, laundry help, washing and sanitizing bottles and pump parts.

Each family’s needs will be different depending on their budget, C-section v. VBAC, any sibling routines, length of family leave, and any planned extended family visits. Some parents are natural night owls and find the nights more or less easy to work. Others enjoy getting up early and spending all day with coffee soaking up all the cuddles in “the newborn bubble”.
Generally, for parents of multiples I always recommend a Newborn Care Specialist and for moms recovering from a complicated birth and/or C-section, I recommend a Postpartum Doula but again, each family is different and that’s my specialty! During the free consultation, I can assess your situation and help guide you to the right solution for you and your family.

It’s almost never too early to book postpartum care! Most families will start looking around the 12-20 week mark so they have plenty of time and capacity to meet with different care providers and narrow down their choices. Chosen Village Newborn Care also books on a first come, first served basis, so reaching out early helps ensure availability around your due date.

The ideal time is when your baby arrives or within the first few weeks. One of the biggest benefits of early postpartum support is prevention: addressing concerns proactively instead of reactively in addition to undervalued emotional support for parents just knowing they’re doing everything “right”!

Births are wildly unpredictable! By creating a 2-4 week “buffer zone” in between clients, I can prevent up to 90% of potential scheduling conflicts and show up when needed rather than anticipated.
On the rare occasion that I am really unavailable, I have a list of highly qualified, dependable women that I will call through and see if someone can fill in for me.

A Newborn Care Specialist provides comprehensive newborn care, with feeding being just a small part of the scope of her care. If you plan on exclusively breastfeeding, an NCS will help tremendously by setting an alarm, getting baby unswaddled, change diaper, bring her to you to feed, grab your pillow, and refill your water/make sure you have everything you need nearby. When baby is done, the NCS will come back in to bring baby back to the nursery, sufficiently burp her, swaddle her, soothe and put back to sleep in bassinet or crib.
A Newborn Care Specialist dramatically cuts down each wake window from 2 hours to 30 mins, allowing the lactating parent to sleep a fuller 6-8 hours instead of the standard 2-4 which often is all it takes to make a world of difference.
